  3.               Upgrading your A1000 to System 3.1 Software

  11.    The older architechture of the A1000 computer, in that it loads its
  12.   Kickstart into Write Once Memory (WOM) from a special kickstart disk, has
  13.   provided a problem for anyone who wanted to upgrade past system 1.3.

  15.    Kickstarts up until 1.3 were provided on disk by Commodore and were 256K
  16.   long. The WOM in the A1000 is also only 256K long, so when system 2.04
  17.   came along, new and improved at 512K long, Commodore stopped supplying
  18.   Kickstart disks as they couldn't have been loaded, anyway.  From this point
  19.   on, Kickstart was now supplied only as a ROM, which the A1000 had no place
  20.   to plug in.  Enterprising people who got sick of loading KS1.3 found that
  21.   the main PCB of the A1000 contained space to allow 4 EPROMS to be fitted
  22.   which could be filled with KS1.3, thus making their machines kickstart disk
  23.   free.  But again, when 2.04 came along, those 4 EPROMS had already reached
  24.   the limit of their storage capacity.

  26.    Now on Aminet CD#3 I found a note, about how to "easily" fit a Commodore
  27.   supplied KS2.04 40 pin ROM into the A1000, by piggybacking over the CPU.
  28.   It didn't work!  It did work (after I corrected a few wrong pin numbers on
  29.   their original list of connections) with a KS1.3 ROM at least, but that
  30.   wasn't an upgrade anyway.  So I set to work to find out what was wrong.

  32.    Several days later, I had a working KS2.04 system. I then tried a
  33.   friend's KS3.1 ROM and bingo - System 3.1 running on my A1000. I've since
  34.   done the conversion on two other machines, one single board, like my own, &
  35.   one daughterboard original NTSC unit. Both have worked fine for several
  36.   weeks now.
